Privacy Policy
Last updated: 29 October 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what personal data the HudHud app and website collect, why, who we share it with, how long we keep it and what your rights are. HudHud ("HudHud", "we") is responsible for your data (the "data controller"). We follow Law No. 058/2021 of 13/10/2021 relating to the protection of personal data and privacy in Rwanda.
1. Data we collect
When you create an account:
- your name, email address, phone number and password (the password is stored encrypted — we cannot read it);
- your account type (Buyer & Renter, Owner or Broker) and the date you accepted the Terms;
- if you are an owner or broker and switch it on: the WhatsApp number buyers and renters may contact you on.
When you use HudHud:
- listings you post: title, description, price and currency, location, details, photos, and — only if you choose — an exact map location (from "use my location") or a Google Maps link;
- listings you save, and buy or rent requests you send or receive (with the dates and message you add);
- messages you send and receive in HudHud chats;
- reports you send, and people you block;
- your language and currency choice (stored only on your phone, or in a small cookie in your browser on the website).
Location: HudHud uses your phone's location only when you tap "use my location" while posting a listing, to pin that listing on the map. We do not track where you are.
We do not use advertising trackers, we do not sell your data, and we do not use your data to show you ads from other companies.
Website cookies: the HudHud website only uses what it needs to work — a small file in your browser that keeps you logged in, and cookies that remember your language and currency. There are no advertising or analytics cookies, so we do not ask you to accept cookies.
2. Why we use your data
- to create and run your account and let you log in (needed to provide the service);
- to show your listings to others and let people contact you (needed to provide the service);
- to deliver requests and messages between users (needed to provide the service);
- to keep HudHud safe: to check reports, remove content that breaks the rules, ban accounts and prevent fraud (our legitimate interest and legal duties);
- to send you emails about your account, such as confirming your email or resetting your password (needed to provide the service);
- to answer you when you contact us.
3. What other users can see
- Your name and account type are shown on your listings, requests and chats.
- Listings, their photos and their location are public, also to people without an account.
- Your phone number is never shown publicly. An owner's or broker's phone number is shared with a buyer or renter only after the owner or broker accepts their request. A buyer's or renter's phone number is shared with the owner or broker when they send a request.
- If an owner or broker switches on WhatsApp, their WhatsApp number is given to logged-in Buyer & Renter accounts that tap the WhatsApp button.
- Chats can only be read by the two people in the chat — and by our safety team if one of them reports the other.
4. Who we share data with
We only share data with companies that help us run HudHud, under contracts that protect your data:
- Supabase Inc.: stores the database, accounts and photos (servers in the European Union (Frankfurt, Germany));
- Resend: sends account emails such as password reset codes;
- Expo (650 Industries): delivers app updates to your phone;
- Netlify Inc.: hosts the HudHud website (it receives the normal connection details, such as your IP address, when you visit);
- Apple and Google: when you download the app from their stores.
When you tap "Open map" or "Directions", Google Maps opens, and when you tap WhatsApp, WhatsApp opens. Those services then handle your data under their own privacy policies. The map on the website shows map images from OpenStreetMap, whose servers receive the normal connection details. To show prices in USD and RWF, HudHud downloads the daily exchange rate from Exchange Rate API; no personal data is sent, only the normal internet connection details.
We may share data with the police, courts or authorities when the law requires it or to protect people from fraud or harm.
5. Where your data is stored
Your data is stored on the servers of Supabase Inc. in the European Union (Frankfurt, Germany). When data is stored or transferred outside Rwanda, we do so only as allowed by Rwandan law, with the authorisation of the National Cyber Security Authority where required, and with safeguards to protect it.
6. How long we keep data
- Your account data, listings, saved items, requests and chats: as long as your account exists.
- When you delete your account, all of it is deleted straight away from the live database, and from backups within 30 days.
- Reports and records of banned accounts: up to 2 years, to keep HudHud safe, unless the law requires longer.
7. Your rights
You have the right to:
- see the personal data we hold about you and get a copy;
- correct wrong data (most of it you can change yourself in Profile → Edit profile);
- delete your data — in the app: Profile → Delete account, or on the website: My account → Delete my account;
- object to or ask us to limit how we use your data;
- withdraw your consent, for example to WhatsApp contact or location, at any time;
- complain to the National Cyber Security Authority (NCSA) of Rwanda.
To use these rights, write to hudhud.support.rw@gmail.com. We answer within 30 days.
8. Security
We protect your data with encrypted connections, encrypted passwords and strict access rules in our database: people can only read and change what they are allowed to. If a data breach happens that puts your data at risk, we will inform the authorities and you as the law requires.
9. Children
HudHud is for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you think a child has an account, tell us and we will delete it.
10. Changes
If we change this policy in an important way, we will tell you in the app and on the website first. The date at the top shows when it was last updated.
